Academy of Live Technology US Arena Rigging Short Course

Take your rigging skills to the next level with this hands-on, expert-led short course.

Gain rigging safety knowledge, hands-on experience with truss, motors, fall arrest systems, and essential gigging skills across arenas, stadiums, and outdoor live event environments. Develop the technical skills and real-world knowledge needed to work on major live entertainment productions. This course prepares you to operate safely, confidently, and professionally. 

Course content

In our Arena Rigging course, you’ll learn:

  • Rigging safety, math, and trigonometry
  • Structural engineering & load calculations (static, dynamic, distributed & point loads)
  • Fall arrest systems & working with truss and motors in arenas, stadiums & outdoor settings
  • An introduction to automation in live events, including TAIT Navigator software & hardware

You’ll learn from industry professionals via a mix of hands-on training and lectures. 

Course outcomes

By the end of the Arena Rigging short course, you’ll have gained a solid understanding of rigging safety protocols and industry best practices. In addition, you will be equipped with essential gigging skills and experience such as:

  • The ability to apply rigging math, trigonometry, and basic structural engineering to real-world scenarios.
  • Hands-on experience setting up fall arrest systems, truss, and motors in a variety of live event environments including arenas, stadiums, and outdoor venues.
  • Foundational knowledge of automation systems in live production, including practical exposure to TAIT Navigator software and hardware.

On successful completion of the course, you’ll gain a micro credential and certificate.

Our Arena Rigging short course is delivered on campus at Rock Lititz in ALT’s industry-standard Studio 4. Train with leading industry professionals in custom-built facilities designed specifically for live events.

Jim Shumway VP - Project Delivery at TAIT

Since joining TAIT in 2013 he has delivered unique solutions for clients of all sizes and markets including arena/stadium concert touring, theme parks, award shows, brand activations, and permanent installations. His portfolio includes productions for clients such as Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, P!NK, Bruno Mars, The Metropolitan Opera, Disney, and Universal Studios.  He is a frequent guest lecturer at the Yale School of Drama and is the author of “Automated Performer Flying: The State of the Art”.
