Last Friday (23 January 2026), Academy of Live Technology students headed out on a coach trip to the ER Productions HQ in Dartford for an unforgettable behind-the-scenes look at one of the UK’s leading laser and pyrotechnics specialists.
The visit gave students a valuable insight into how lasers and pyrotechnics are used across live events, television and film, alongside an introduction to the software, workflows and safety considerations involved in pre-visualisation and show planning.
Inside the ER Productions Workshop
One of the highlights of the day was a live demonstration in ER Productions’ workshop. The team set up a full rig to showcase the scope of their capabilities, treating students to demonstrations using a wide range of lasers and pyrotechnic effects.
Alongside seeing the effects in action, students were able to talk through the process of designing, building and programming these systems, learning more about the specialist equipment and technical decision-making involved.
Large-Scale Pyrotechnics in Action
Students were also treated to a large-scale pyrotechnics demonstration, including a spectacular 40-foot flame effect. This particular effect has been used atop stages for major artists, including Bring Me The Horizon during their Download Festival headline set, giving students a real sense of the scale and impact of pyro in arena and festival environments.
Exploring Laser Technology and Drones
The visit also explored the evolving capabilities of laser technology, including ER Productions’ recent addition of laser-equipped drones. Students gained insight into how these emerging technologies are being incorporated into live shows to create new visual experiences.
TV and Film
Beyond live events, ER Productions also work extensively across television and film. One standout example was their work on The Celebrity Traitors, where they created the now-famous laser game.
Students (and staff!) were given the chance to try the challenge themselves - shimmying through the laser beams without breaking them. Unsurprisingly, it proved much harder in real life than it looks on screen.
Behind the Scenes: Pre-Visualisation Suites
Students were given access to two of ER Productions’ pre-visualisation suites, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how shows are designed and planned for clients. These suites are used to visualise complex set-ups, refine creative ideas and ensure intricate shows run as smoothly and safely as possible once on site.
Industry Insight from a Leading Lighting Designer
Another highlight from the days was a Zoom call from lighting designer Durham Marenghi, who talked students through some of his incredible projects. He discussed the challenges faced on large-scale productions and how he has cleverly used lasers to overcome them, including work on Olympic opening and closing ceremonies and London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.
An Inspiring Experience
We’d like to thank ER Productions for an excellent and inspiring visit. This trip gave students a fantastic opportunity to connect their technical learning with real-world application, and we know many came away with a clearer picture of potential future career paths within the live events and creative industries.
