Gain essential skills needed to work safely, confidently and professionally behind the scenes. 

Our Technical Production Skills Bootcamp (York & North Yorkshire) is designed to prepare you for a hands-on technical career in the live events, theatre and screen production industry. Across ten focused modules, you’ll develop the practical skills and knowledge to assist production technical teams and meet key compliance standards. With a blend of classroom learning, real-world scenarios and practical exercises, you’ll be ready to step into crewing and backstage roles that keep productions running safely, smoothly and successfully.

Course outcomes

You’ll complete key industry certifications, gain hands-on experience in technical production and leave with the skills, confidence and connections to step into entry-level behind the scenes roles, with access to interviews and real freelance opportunities. You’ll also receive a certificate of completion and a LinkedIn digital badge.

This course has mandatory enrolment day and CV clinic, 2 weeks full time learning and an Event Safety Passport [or equivalent] Training and Certification totaling 12 days of training.

Please note that the following eligibility criteria must be met in order to receive funding for this course: 

  • 19 years of age and over  
  • Be based in York or the North Yorkshire region  
  • Have the legal right to work in the UK

Meet your tutors

Instructor teaching

Jack is an experienced educator with a 12-year background in Higher Education. His expertise spans both academic and vocational training within the creative industries, specialising in areas such as Special Effects for Film and Television, technical production, event management and 3D printing/scanning. He holds a PGCert in Higher and Professional Education and a BDes (1st Class Hons) in Special Effects Development and has designed, delivered and assessed learning for undergraduate students. Recognised for his commitment to student success, including a nomination for an Outstanding Lecturer Award, Jack offers a strong blend of academic rigour and practical industry training. 

 

Terry Maskell

Terry has over 47 years of industry experience, including more than 33 as a Gaffer, specialising in lighting for film and television. His credits span feature films, commercials, TV series and sports, with notable projects including Gentleman Jack, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, The Limehouse Golem and Dad’s Army. Starting as an apprentice electrician at London Weekend Television in 1977, advancing to Best Boy in 1988 and progressed through the ranks to Gaffer by 1992. Since 2021, he has also shared his expertise as a senior tutor with Screen Skills and Screen Yorkshire and as a lighting tutor for MA students at Met Film.
